Background and choice of committee members

Internal committee member 1: Dr. Brooke Foucault Welles

Dr. Welles (https://camd.northeastern.edu/commstudies/people/brooke-foucault-welles/) is an Associate Professor in the College of Arts, Media & Design and a core faculty member for the Network Science PhD program. With her research on social network science and leveraging social network resources for personal and organization goals, Dr. Brooke Foucault Welles’s expertise will be critical in exploring how technology can support youth activists’ use of online social networks for their advocacy efforts. Moreover, Dr. Brooke Foucault Welles has been one of the PI’s in a Tier 1 proposal that was part of the formative study conducted for this thesis. She is also a co-PI on our newly funded NSF grant for this research. Her ongoing involvement with the thesis will be very useful.

Internal committee member 2: Dr. Cody Dunne

Dr. Cody Dune is an Assistant Professor in CCIS. One focus of this thesis is the use of visualization tools on mobile phones to help youth in leveraging the resources within their social networks. With his research on information visualization and network science, Dr. Cody Dunne’s expertise is a great fit for identifying information visualization contributions in this thesis.

External committee member: Dr. Andrés Monroy-Hernández

Dr. Andrés Monroy-Hernández (http://www.andresmh.com) is a lead research scientist at Snap, Inc. He will contribute his expertise in civic technology, social computing, and online collaboration. We are excited to integrate his expertise and experience in the domain of civic tech. The addition of Dr. Monroy-Hernández will also help us bridge the gap between our research and industry, as he contributes insights grounded in his work at Microsoft Research and more recently at Snap, Inc.
